A film about the historic encounter between the elderly Johann Sebastian Bach and the young King Frederick II—a blend of power and music.
Potsdam, May 1747: The elderly Johann Sebastian Bach (Vadim Glowna) meets the young King Frederick II (Jürgen Vogel). For a week, the two flatter and humiliate one another; they argue and make music together, caught between power and music. On one side is the cosmopolitan but moody monarch, who is deeply troubled by his relationship with his father and whose city palace is sinking into chaos due to the move to Sanssouci. On the other is the eccentric, fun-loving patriarch, who is gradually losing his sight. The power struggle between these two titans turns into a father-son conflict—at times humorous, at times painful—that also throws the Bach family into disarray. Bach’s *Musical Offering*, a work full of riddles and coded messages, stands as a testament to this encounter to this day. Dominique de Rivaz’s film won the Swiss Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2004.
