Johann Viktor von Besenval, the son of a Solothurn patrician, saw the most magnificent castles in Europe during his Grand Tour in the early 1660s. Twenty years later, well on his way to becoming the most influential man in Solothurn, Besenval set out to realize his dream of owning a castle. Inspired by French and Italian models, he had a Baroque masterpiece built just outside the city gates: Waldegg Castle—one of Switzerland’s most striking Baroque secular buildings, featuring magnificent gardens and avenues stretching far into the countryside.
