The magnificent gardens are what give Waldegg Castle its special charm: on the building’s stately south side lies the Baroque parterre, one of the first “à la française” gardens in the Swiss Confederation. Stone columns and obelisks bear witness to the builder’s claim to power; strictly symmetrical garden beds lined with boxwood reflect a desire to master nature. An octagonal fountain in the center of the garden provides welcome relief from the summer heat.
Via an impressive flight of stairs on the south side of the garden, the path leads through a wrought-iron gate into the approximately 500-meter-long avenue lined with summer linden trees. To the west lies the orangery parterre, where the scent of blooming lemon, calamansi, and pomegranate saplings makes one dream of the south. To the north of this is the traditionally laid-out kitchen garden with flowers and vegetables. Most of the plants are old ProSpecieRara varieties that were already known in the area some 150 years ago.
