From 1918 on, Swiss interior decorator and industrial designer Wilhelm Kienzle led a class for interior finishing at the Zurich School of Design (now Zurich University of the Arts), where he was instrumental in the development of home furnishings in Switzerland. In addition to teaching, he worked as a freelance designer. His durable objects, which were modest in appearance and functional in form, shaped the product landscape in Switzerland. His long-term friendship with manufacturer Willi Blattmann from Wädenswil began around 1935 and resulted in a number of products for Blattmann Metallwarenfabrik (MEWA), including the cactus watering can.
