Intro
Castle and outbuildings
Since its completion in 1908, Château Mercier has seemed unfazed by change. Despite aging, weather, the march of modernity, and pests, Jean-Jacques Mercier’s summer residence and the park designed by his wife, Marie de Molin, preserve their original spirit. With the exception of the Poolhouse—added in the 1940s for the grandchildren and converted into a seminar room in the 1990s—the outbuildings (the Villa, the Chalet Noir, the Canopy, the Stables, and the Greenhouse) have stood the test of time without losing their identity or functions.Yet this apparent permanence masks a more fragile story of adaptations, repurposed spaces, and constant care. Danger is not always spectacular; it also hides in the silent wear and tear of materials, the maintenance of decor, the conservation of collections, and the living balance of a century-old park. The tour will take you through the château, the outbuildings, and the park in turns, allowing you to appreciate a valuable ensemble rare in its coherence, and serving as a reminder of how heritage is a legacy as beautiful as it is vulnerable.
