Overview
Intro
Lucile Lacaze is staging a Shakespeare play about power and desire.
In a city ruled by an authoritarian man, a young woman fights to save her brother, who has been sentenced to death, and discovers that justice comes at a price. Set in Shakespeare’s Vienna—a city under the grip of a regime cloaked in morality—Lucile Lacaze weaves a political thriller laced with dark humor. Four actors portray a dozen characters in a condensed version of this classic, which draws the audience into a relentless web of manipulation, plot twists, and dramatic surprises. The stage design is minimalist, the performance very open to the audience, and the language vivid and concrete. By placing Isabella—a young novice at a convent forced to make a chilling deal: her brother’s life in exchange for her virginity—at the center of the story, the Lyon-based director sheds light on the full violence of this unclassifiable play, which is permeated by abuses of power. A tense production where laughter erupts when you least expect it.
