Description

The «Herzschlaufe Sense» boasts little-known scenic and touristic appeal. The area of the German-speaking part of the canton of Freiburg is intimately intertwined with its local landscape and its own culture apart, well worth discovering. Extending approximately 72 kilometres in length, the route makes for an engrossing e-bike day tour, with ample opportunity to take in the splendid scenery.

The circular route starts in the Bernese town of Laupen, at the confluence of the Sense and Saane rivers. It leaves the little medieval town and ascends into the hills, with their soft dips and peaks. After Schmitten, the paths become more secluded and the surroundings quainter. Old barns and chapels along the wayside tell the story of this area. Following the Taverna river uphill, the route ascends gradually, offering an ever-greater outlook. Near Rechthalten, there is a fantastic view far into Romandy, the French-speaking region of Switzerland. And above Plaffeien, the hills around Schwarzsee Lake and the Gantrisch region entice riders onwards.

The route runs back downhill along the Sense again on little-frequented back roads, with the river visible only as a hint of dark gorge. The sloping edges of the forest contrast with sunny pastures along the little back roads. Only in Thörishaus does the route finally join the Sense again, following it atop a calm, little river bank road on back to Laupen. On sunny days, the cool water entices you to take a dip.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
