Tips for three autumn days in Ascona-Locarno Culinary and sporting adventures
Intro
The sun-drenched region of Ascona-Locarno has plenty of Mediterranean flair and boasts a wealth of hikes and regional specialities. The highest valley in Ticino is also a great choice for anyone who enjoys sports.
Day 1
Lavertezzo: Revöira circular hike
Lavertezzo is famous for its stone arch bridge that spans the aqua waters of the Verzasca River. It’s hard to fathom that this valley with its abundance of water once suffered from a lack of water. This circular hike provides a glimpse of how villagers made use of an unusual water catchment system to deal with this problem. Basins were set up on the left side of the valley on the mountain pastures of Revöira and Ca d Dént to store water, which was very often in short supply.
This leisurely circular hike passes by reservoirs and takes hikers on a journey back in time to an era when the search for water was a true art.
Day 2
Locarno-Domodossola: Foliage Train
The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway offers a spectacular journey through the vibrant colours of autumn. The panoramic route from Locarno on Lake Maggiore to Domodossola in Italy and back is taken at a leisurely pace. The train takes two hours to complete its journey through the middle of the wild and colourful Centovalli (hundred valleys) landscape, taking its passengers across dizzyingly high viaducts, past deep gorges and thundering waterfalls, between vineyards and golden chestnut forests and through tunnels and hairpin bends. Trains run every hour, and you can break your journey once on the outward and return journey to visit the most beautiful places along the railway line.
Day 3
Dirinella – Contone: Following the educational trail
The “Between Mountains and Lake” educational trail leads from the small fishing hamlet of Dirinella to the bustling village of Contone in the well-known Magadino Plain.
On this approximately 6.5 hour walk, you’ll get the chance to learn fascinating facts about the history, economy and flora and fauna of the region. The trail crosses meadows, passes by traditional Ticino villages and runs through vibrant orange beech and chestnut woods, with the glittering blue waters of Lake Maggiore on your left and the impressive Monte Gambarogno on your right.
Restaurant tip
Brione sopra Minusio: Ca’ Nostra
At Ca’ Nostra, Claudia and Gianluca work hard to ensure their family restaurant is an authentic taste of Ticino. The welcoming restaurant makes guests feel completely at home while they enjoy a sophisticated menu.
Ca’ Nostra has long-standing relationships with its suppliers, enabling it to serve up creative dishes using local ingredients. Diners can enjoy a unique view of Lake Maggiore and the autumnal colours of the Gambarogno and Locarnese regions. When staying near Lake Maggiore a visit to a grotto – a simple tavern in the woods or near a mountain – is a must.Hotel tip
