Intro

The Valaisian Suonen Museum is in the heart of the little village of Botyre (Ayent Community) 6 kilometres away from Anzère. It is dedicated to issues pertaining to the Suonen (ancient irrigation channels).

“Suonen in German or bisses in French” are mainly old, narrow channels, which for centuries carried water from distant glacier streams to the rain-starved Valaisan valleys. Some of them were hacked out of cliff faces in potentially fatal conditions. These channels are an essential part of Valaisan history.
The museum in located in the “Painted House”, a building from the 17th century that is a protected monument. In the 270- square-meter exhibiton area, visitors can retrace the history of the Sounen over the centuries, from the Romans to the present. On four floors the visitor embarks on a journey into the past.
