Alp Grüm at a glance

Alp Grüm is located at 2091 metres above sea level on the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway in the canton of Graubünden. The station has no road connection. Nevertheless, there are 2 restaurants on site with sun terraces, regional cuisine and overnight accommodation. The view extends from the Palüg glacier over the entire Puschlav to Italy.

What to experience

Local specialties at 2091 meters

Right next to the train station, Albergo Ristorante Alp Grüm serves local dishes such as pizzoccheri and capuns in a rustic setting. A 15-minute walk above the train station is the Casa Alpina Belvedere with a terrace and an unobstructed view of the Palü Glacier and the Puschlav. Both restaurants also offer rooms for overnight stays.

  • Good to know: Both restaurants are only open seasonally (around April–October).
  • Tip: From the terrace of the Casa Alpina Belvedere you can see the glacier particularly well.

Walk to Lagh da Palü (30 minutes)

From the Alp Grüm station, a steep path leads down to the turquoise Lagh da Palü at the foot of Piz Palü. The mountain lake shows its typical heart shape from above. On the shore you will find rest areas with a view of the glacier and the mountains. The return to the station takes a little longer than the descent.

  • Good to know: The descent is steep, wear sturdy shoes.
  • Tip: Visit the lake in the fall, when the larches around the lake turn golden yellow.

Hike from Ospizio Bernina to Alp Grüm (2 hours)

Start on the Bernina Pass at the Ospizio Bernina and hike along the turquoise-green Lago Bianco through a plateau at 2250 meters. After a good hour, you will reach the Sassal Mason alpine hut with its characteristic round stone houses. From the vantage point, the path leads you across alpine meadows down to Alp Grüm.

  • Good to know: The hike is mostly flat and slightly descending.
  • Tip: From St. Moritz or Tirano with the Bernina Express.
