Did you know that mushrooms create their own network - without any cables or computers? Build your own mushroom set in our «mushroom lab» with Susanne Hartmann.
Do you want to watch how the delicate root-like mycelium threads find their way — without eyes or ears? Create your own mushroom-growing kit and grow pink oyster mushrooms at home!
Artist Susanne Hartmann, whose work is featured in the Other Intelligences exhibition, transforms the HEK workshop space into a mini mushroom lab. Together with her, you’ll build your own mushroom kit using jars, wood shavings, and moss. In it, you can grow pink oyster mushrooms — vibrant, pink-colored fungi. Along the way, you’ll also learn more about the fascinating world of fungi and their underground networks.
At the end of the workshop, you can take this little ecosystem home with you. To help your pink oyster mushrooms thrive and continue growing, you’ll receive a guide with care and harvesting tips. Pink oyster mushrooms are edible and grow well at room temperature.
The workshop lasts about one hour and starts at the beginning of every hour. Sign up via the ticket link. The workshop is recommended for children aged 7 and up (younger siblings are also welcome). Adults accompany the children during the workshop – and are of course welcome to get creative themselves!
Susanne Hartmann is an artist and designer based in Basel, whose interdisciplinary practice bridges art, science, and design.
She explores how natural processes, technology, and cultural structures are intertwined. In her Experiments series, she investigates the growth and behavior of mycelium — the "invisible architects of life." In Experiments III, which is featured in the Other Intelligences exhibition, she cultivates mycelium in petri dishes. Over the course of the exhibition, the mycelium grows into unique shapes and structures. In addition to her artistic work, Susanne Hartmann is a visual communication designer and co-founder of a branding and design agency based in Basel.
