Nordwind- an open-air theater

With the open-air theater "Nordwind", written by Annemarie Stähli, "theaterwelten" - formerly Oberländer Märlibühni - takes you to the far north this summer in Steffisburg. Immerse yourself in the moving story of Finja, who is inextricably linked to the small fishing village of Weierdal. Experience lovable characters, mystical images and strong dialog.

Gentle hills, deep green fir forest, in between the typical Nordic colorful wooden houses including fishing port, rope-making and fjord pub: The theaterwelten team gives the mystical natural backdrop of the Schnittweier valley above Steffisburg an unmistakable Nordic aura this summer. From July 22 to August 29, audiences can immerse themselves in another world at this special location.

Great emotions in the open air

"Nordwind" is the name of the touching story written by author and director Annemarie Stähli from Steffisburg. It centers on Finja, who has just completed twelve years in prison - for a crime she never committed. During this difficult time, Finja has not only lost her freedom, but also her trust in the world. When she is released from prison, she is greeted by the north wind - relentless and piercingly cold.

And the people are just as unforgiving: Society has long since passed judgment. Exclusion lies like a shadow over Finja's life. Her bitterness grows and hatred begins to harden her heart.

In the darkest night, however, she remembers the North Star - that distant, bright light that once gave her hope and allowed her to look ahead.

So she finally returns to the place where it all began: To a fishing village scarred by fire, its livelihood in ruins. No one here knows her name or asks about her past. And in these quiet, often surprising encounters with the lovable and quirky villagers, she discovers what she thought she had lost: humanity, warmth and the great power of love.

Live music for the first time

Following the name change in November 2024, "Nordwind" is the first play that the former Oberländer Märlibühni is staging under its new name theaterwelten. Even under the new name, the makers' primary goal is to touch and enchant the audience and immerse them in new worlds. In addition to the atmospheric backdrop, authentic acting, magical lighting moods, an elaborate stage set and costumes that appeal to the eye, this also includes a lovingly furnished Nordic bistro.

For the first time, live music will enrich the production of "Nordwind". Two musicians will provide a virtuoso accompaniment to the action on stage with violin, guitar and Hardanger fiddle. Together with the live singing of the vocal ensemble, the authentic drama merges with the tailor-made music and the wonderful songs to create an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Acting rehearsals began in January under the direction of Annemarie Stähli. Almost 40 actors aged between 10 and 70 will populate the stage in the Schnittweier. Together with the large team working behind the scenes, there are around 120 people who are devoting a large part of their free time and a great deal of passion to the project.

Theaterwelten is planning 21 performances in Schnittweier this summer.
