Tête-Noire Gorge
Overview
Intro
A circular trail leads from Tête-Noire to the tantalisingly named Gorges Mystérieuses – mysterious gorges.
Shortly after the Valais village of Trient, on the road to Chamonix, a loop will take you to the mysterious gorges of Tête-Noire. Created in 1884, the path leads down into the forest via steep stone steps. 120 metres of walkways and bridges take you to the bottom of the gorge. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll encounter the first of the gorge’s secrets: a series of idyllic waterfalls cascading down a flat rocky outcrop. Then another set of steps – invisible at first glance – lead to the second secret: the Grotte aux Nymphes, or fairy grotto, an authentic natural cathedral hidden under gigantic slabs of rock that lean one against the other. This is a natural phenomenon of enormous beauty.
Parts of the return trail follow the old footpath linking Martigny in Switzerland with Chamonix in France. There is also a slightly longer trail to the mysterious gorge that starts in Finhaut.
Getting there: Take the PostBus from Martiny for Châtelard, Frontière as far as the “Tête-Noire” stop. Please note that there are only a few buses each day on this route. By car, pass through Trient and follow the signs as far as the “Tête-Noire” car park. Alternatively, take the Mont-Blanc Express to Finhaut or Châtelard and then hike through the gorge.
