The museum has an extensive collection ranging from the late Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on Swiss art of the 19th and 20th centuries. It provides a broad insight into the development of Swiss landscape painting, for example with paintings by Frank Buchser, Alexandre Calame or Otto Frölicher. With groups of works by Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet, Swiss Art Nouveau and Modernism are represented. Also included are holdings by Félix Vallotton, Albert Trachsel, Hans Berger and Max Gubler, whose work is conveyed by a large foundation. In addition, thanks to the Dübi-Müller Foundation and the Josef Müller Foundation, there are outstanding works by international artists such as Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse. Swiss iron sculpture of the 1960s and 1970s forms another accent. The focus on Swiss art is maintained through to contemporary art, including important works by Roman Signer.
