Llama trekking on Monte Comino
Overview
Intro
Llama trekking in the Centovalli is no ordinary activity, and can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Discovering the hidden treasures of Monte Comino together with these four-legged friends, escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoying a Ticinese culinary treat at “Alla Capanna” are all part of the unique experience.
The journey up to Monte Comino already promises to be a lot of fun: The blue and white train, affectionately termed the Centovallina by locals, takes you from Locarno to the Centovalli. Passing idyllic Ticino villages, it climbs steadily up to Verdasio. The journey continues with a cable car ride, taking around seven minutes, up to Monte Comino – where animal trekking dreams become a reality. After a short walk, visitors reach the llama farm run by Marisa and Jean-Pierre Bäschlin.
Upon arrival, they are greeted by the curious gaze of the llamas. A whistle from Jean-Pierre prompts the herd to move to the large enclosure. Now the llamas can be petted and brushed and prepared for the trek ahead. Once the group is ready, the strict hierarchy of the llamas must be respected. All of them follow the alpha llama, which makes leading the animals easy, even for children. The llamas’ empathetic and sensitive nature makes them the perfect companions and will motivate every child to go hiking.
Guests can discover the breathtakingly beautiful landscape on Monte Comino by foot during a half or full-day tour. Setting off from the farm, hikers pass “rustici” (old Ticinese farmhouses), dry grasslands and moors, as well as meadows full of alpine flowers. When the forest thins out, the view of the Centovalli and the surrounding peaks is impressive.
Back at the farm, the guests have forgotten the stresses of everyday life and are fully enjoying the moment. The trekking tour is followed by culinary immersion in the cosy “grotto” restaurant “Alla Capanna”. The sun terrace features natural stone tables made of Ticino granite. The menu promises gourmet delights including homemade local luganighe sausages and gnocchi.
Getting there: From Locarno, the Centovalli railway takes half an hour to get to Verdasio. Take the Verdasio–Monte Comino cable car to the top and follow the signs for the llama farm.
