Intro
Traditions such as the “Silvesterchläuse”, Alpine cattle drive, mountain farming, home life and string music form the focus of the museum, where visitors are encouraged to play their part. The museum also offers an insight into the typical domestic culture of Alpine farming and traditional handicraft workshops.
More than 400 years old, the Appenzell-style house in the centre of Urnäsch exudes a homely atmosphere with its crooked, low-ceilinged rooms and slanted wooden floors. It offers an insight into the peasant culture of the Appenzellerland, its associated crafts and the customs that are deeply rooted in the population of the Urnäsch Valley and still practised to this day.
Visitors can try out Appenzell musical instruments and giant cowbells used for the “Schelleschötte”, practise their coin-rolling skills, play the dulcimer or try wordless yodelling known as “Zauren”. The charming little museum is situated on the village square with its beautiful row of houses.
