At the Natural History Museum Bern, you can experience 4.6 billion years of geological history, meet the world-famous rescue dog Barry and travel in dioramas through the animal worlds of Switzerland, Africa and the Arctic.
The Natural History Museum Bern at a glance
Located in Bern's Kirchenfeld district, the museum shows constantly changing exhibitions as well as several permanent exhibitions. Among the most impressive permanent exhibitions are the one on climate change, on the St. Bernard Barry and the historical dioramas on the animal world of three continents.
What to experience
Visit the permanent exhibition "Man, Earth!" (1 hour)
On 630 square meters, you hike through 4.6 billion years of climate history. Encounter monster swamps, fire worlds and the mass extinction of dinosaurs until you arrive at man-made climate change today. The exhibition focuses on hope instead of doom and gloom and shows what can be moved.
- Good to know: There are guided tours that are suitable for children aged 12 and over.
Barry, the legendary Saint Bernard dog (45-60 minutes)
The world's most famous rescue dog helped at the Großer St. Bernhard about 40 lost and buried people made of snow and ice. His dissected body is now in its own exhibition. Here you can see what is fact and what is legend about Barry's exploits and immerse yourself in the rough life on the 2473-meter-high pass.

Three continents in the dioramas (30–45 minutes)
Over 160 historical dioramas take you from the Swiss Alpine meadow to the African savannah and the Arctic ice. You will see alpine ibex and lynx, meet cheetahs and a white rhinoceros. And you're standing in front of polar bears and walruses in the far north. The changing light in the diorama simulates a daily routine.
- Good to know: The diorama "Animals of Africa" also addresses colonial history.
