Intro

This circular tour has impressive views of the Aletsch Glacier, the biggest glacier in the Alps, and the 4,000-metre peaks of Valais, making it the perfect hike for nature lovers. After Chatzulecher, you will come particularly close to the ice.

Description

This circular hike leads through the spectacular landscape of the Aletsch Glacier, the biggest glacier in the Alps, which is constantly in view. The glacier carved out the landscape in this area over thousands of years. Due to climate change, the ice flow loses over 50 metres of its approximately 20 kilometres in length per year. Since 2001, the Jungfrau-Aletsch region has been recognised as a UNESCO natural World Heritage property.

The tour sets off from the Moosfluh mountain station, one of the four view points in the Aletsch Arena. With the glacier in constant view to the north and the 4,000-metre peaks to the south, the route initially leads along the panoramic trail towards Bettmerhorn. After around one kilometre, it branches off and begins the descent towards the edge of the glacier via Chatzulecher. The little lakes along the way are a wonderful spot to take a break before tackling the ascent.

The way back via the Aletsch Forest is demanding, making the impressive views all the more spectacular. From Alte Stafel onwards, where the views may be the most beautiful, you will head back to Moosfluh mountain station. You can either make the descent to Riederalp on foot or take the convenient cable car.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
