Bucheggberg-Route
Overview
Intro
A pleasant ride through some of the most unspoilt and prettiest stretches of country, through snug farming villages and over gently rolling hills as far as the valley of the River Aare.
Description
Starting out from Herzogenbuchsee, this cycling tour first traverses the outer Wasseramt district, where the idyllic Burgäschisee lake offers great swimming, either within the public bathing facility or the bathing area. Only then does the route go through the «Buechibärg», as the locals call this region that is just within reach of the cities of Solothurn, Bienne and Berne. Soon thereafter, we reach Lüterkofen. Here, we see the typical scenery offered by the Bucheggberg: broad, fertile valleys beside gentle hills topped by woods. Unspoilt villages, imposing farmhouses and sawmills reflect this countryside marked by farming and forestry.
On metalled side-roads, past the farmhouse where thousands of pumpkins can be seen in the season and via a rugged climb, the hill chain is reached, where another quality of the Bucheggberg is revealed in Tscheppach: the pleasures of the table (gastronomy). The venerable «Kreuz», stylishly and sumptuously restored, is only one example of many opportunities to enjoy hearty rustic fare or exquisite wining and dining in Buechibärg. Following the chain of hills, the highest point is reached in Gächliwil after passing through Hessigkofen. A detour into the countryside or for sightseeing is worthwhile - the Pomaretum (orchard for the cultivation of adapted apple varieties), the Christmas market at Aetikofen or the «Grabenöle» - an over 400-year-old walnut-oil mill in Lüterswil.
One of the qualities of the Bucheggberg is that a leisurely journey is worthwhile since, besides revealing lovely scenery to the spectator, there are countless structural gems and unusual objects of interest. A view across the Bucheggberg and the River Aare valley to the foot of the southern Jura mountains and down to the «Seeland» opens up on the ride from Biezwil to Schnottwil, from where we finally reach the town of Büren an der Aare.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
