Freiburger Voralpenweg
Overview
Intro
Easy hike from the peaceful Schwarzsee lake over over the primeval landscape of the Brecca Schlund (gorge) up to the Euschelspass. On the descent to Jaun: ruins of historic Bellegarde Castle with panorama panels and superb views deep into Gruyère country.
Description
The idyllic Schwarzsee lake is nestled amongst the Fribourg Prealps. It owes its name to its dark reflections of the surrounding woodland. The region began to attract tourism when the spa was built here in 1784. The entire Freiburger Voralpenweg route overlaps with the national route of the Alpine Panorama Trail. The route starts at head of the lake in Gantrisch Nature Park. After just another 100 metres or so, you will already have crossed into the Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut nature park. Surrounded by magnificent scenery, the route proceeds along the shores of the lake into the forest.
Now comes a short climb to the primeval landscape of Breccaschlund, one of the most beautiful Alpine valleys in Switzerland. Formed by glaciers, the limestone rock faces jut out into the sky, while cows and goats graze on the valley floor. You will glimpse the Stierenberg over the Schwarzsee lake for the last time. You can stop to rest at the Alpine tavern “Untere Euschels” after around two and a half hours. Once your energy is replenished, you can press ahead with the last climb to the Euschelspass. The view of the Gastlosen mountain range is breathtaking.
The descent begins at the pass: it is now around an hour until you reach Jaun, your destination for this leg. Its distinctive wooden houses, dating back to the 17th to 19th centuries, give this village character and are a testament to its long relationship with the Simmental valley.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
