L'Areuse–Emme–Sihl
Overview
Intro
Over the Lindenberg into Freiamt, sweeping alongside the train to Zug, where towering office blocks contrast with the pleasant old town, winding north with the Sihl, through the lonely Sihlwald forest, an area of wilderness at the gates of the city.
Description
Urswil is part of the municipality of Hochdorf. Its origins date back to 924. This stage runs through rural areas to Sins in the canton of Aargau. The path here leads you across a historic covered wooden bridge across the Reuss, built by the city of Zug in 1640. The current village of Sins has always been the centre of a large parish. The oldest documented mention of a priest dates back to 1245.
As you approach Lake Zug, the surrounding area becomes increasingly urban. From Cham, the route leads briefly along Lake Zug towards Zug. The Choller protected area is located between Cham and Zug and, despite its small size, it offers a remarkable variety of habitats and the bird species that live there.
The cycle path then leads along the Lorze to Baar. You briefly have to cross a busy street in Sihlbrugg. The route then plunges down along the banks of the Sihl into the Sihl Valley. The Sihl winds through the valley towards Zurich. The Sihlwald is an original beech forest, covering approximately 1,100 hectares in the heart of the Zurich-Zug-Lucerne urban area. Thanks to its protection by natural processes, the Sihlwald has become a wild, natural forest and provides habitats and food for numerous plants and animals. It also offers a unique experience of nature for human visitors.
At Sihlwald railway station, you will find the visitor centre of the Zurich Wilderness Park Sihlwald. It has a museum as well as a beaver and otter enclosure that is freely accessible at any time.
The final section of this stage runs along the Sihl through the suburbs of Zurich. You continue through the city of Zurich to the main railway station, where the Sihl flows into the Limmat behind the Sihlquai.
