Intro
The run to Tannalp passes over undulating terrain and has a relatively good guarantee of snow due to its altitude. In addition to the view of the Obwalden mountain peaks, it is also fascinating to see the ice fishers along the route.
Description
Access to the run is directly adjacent to the panorama lift at Melchsee lake. Before putting on your skis, it’s worth taking the short trip on the lift up to the viewing platform nearly 40 metres above Melchsee. At the top you can enjoy the impressive panorama of the Obwalden mountain scenery, flanked to the east by Mount Titlis and stretching across the Wendenstock peaks and Balmeregghorn as far as Brünighaupt in the west. The view down to the lake far below is dizzying.
The circuit to Tannalp and back includes a number of slight uphill and downhill sections. At the foot of Mount Bonistock, the trail initially runs along Tannensee lake to the hamlet of Tannalp. In spite of the name (Tanne means fir tree), one thing you will not find here is coniferous trees. Cows spend their Alpine summer here, but in the winter it is an untouched, treeless landscape affording a view of Engstlenalp and Gental valley.
Anyone not wishing to tackle the entire route in one go can take a break before returning to Melchsee-Frutt – either at the Tannalp mountain restaurant for a culinary stopover or at the chapel for a contemplative pause. There is a second chapel just before the finish. Situated on a peninsula in the reservoir lake, Melchsee Chapel is a real eye-catcher. If you’re lucky you might also get to observe a rare sport that is pursued on the two frozen lakes along the route: the Frutt is a mecca for ice fishing.
