Description

Chamonas d’Ela is a small hut in Parc Ela, Switzerland’s largest nature park. It is located on the pass between Savognin (Surses) and Bergün (Albula Valley). If you want to climb the two mighty Dolomite peaks of Tinzenhorn and Piz Ela, you can stay here overnight.

First, you follow a beautiful path and later a gravel trail leading down through Val Spadlatscha to Cloters. After the first 500 metres or so of elevation, the trail turns into the forest. It continues downhill, along the Selabach stream. Having already descended around 900 metres in elevation, the final 400 metre-descent lies ahead. The last section winds its way along a beautiful, narrow path down to Albula. After crossing the largest tributary of the Hinterrhein, you reach Filisur.

This picturesque village with its Engadine houses lies at the junction of the Rhaetian Railway between the Albula and Davos lines. The village’s main landmark is the imposing, 65 metre-high Landwasser Viaduct, which has a radius of 100 metres and feeds directly into a tunnel. The Albula line, with its spiral tunnels, galleries and several viaducts, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.

After leaving the village, you first take a path and later a gravel road up to Schönboda. Back on the path, the next hour and a half are in a class of their own: a spectacular hiking trail crosses gullies, scree and avalanche paths that extend from the Muchetta massif to the Landwasser river. While you need to watch your step, exposed sections are secured with chains and ropes. From Drostobel, you have a fantastic view of the Wiesen Viaduct. At 210 metres long and around 90 metres high, it is the tallest and largest brick-built bridge on the Rhaetian Railway. In Jenisberg, an old Walser settlement that is inhabited all year round, you can take a break at the Gässälibeiz restaurant.

A path takes you to the Tällibach stream. A little further down is the former Silberberg mine. In the Middle Ages and the 19th century, it was a profitable lead and zinc mine. Now comes the last hour of the hike to Davos Monstein. Situated on a sunny slope, the village is surrounded by imposing peaks, Alpine meadows and vast forests. You’ve definitely earned a Monstein beer, which is made at a brewery in the village.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
