The Sunnegga-Rothorn cableways at a glance

The connection from Zermatt to the Rothorn mountain station in Valais leads via 3 lifts: A funicular to Sunnegga at 2288 metres, a gondola lift to Blauherd at 2571 metres and an aerial tramway to the Rothorn mountain station at 3103 metres. The funicular is the first in Switzerland to run completely in the tunnel. The journey takes about 35 minutes.

What to experience

Take the funicular to Sunnegga (5 minutes)

The funicular takes you through the mountain to Sunnegga in a few minutes. On foot or with the Leisee shuttle you can get to the Wolli Adventure Park. Slides, swings, climbing frames, a water game and a wooden ball track await you here. With a raft you pull yourself on a rope over the Leisee.

  • Good to know: In 15 minutes on foot you can reach the restaurants in the hamlet of Findeln.
  • Tip: In summer, ride your kickbike from Sunnegga down to Zermatt.

Take the gondola up to Blauherd (7 minutes)

The gondola lift takes you from Sunnegga up to Blauherd. This is where the 9-kilometre-long hiking trail back to Sunnegga begins, past 5 mountain lakes. The Matterhorn is reflected in the Stellisee and rare alpine plants grow at the Grindjisee and the Grünsee. The Moosjisee glows turquoise blue and a swim at the Leisee beckons.

  • Good to know: Baden is only allowed in the Grünsee and the Leisee.
  • Tip: Take your camera with you, the Matterhorn is particularly beautiful here.

Visit the Peak Collection by aerial tramway (7 minutes)

From Blauherd you float up to 3103 meters. Around the Rothorn restaurant there are 18 metal sculptures. Each is dedicated to a mountain in the region and contains a piece of rock from its summit. Behind it are the originals, above all the free-standing Matterhorn.

  • Good to know: The circular route is suitable for children from the age of 4.
  • Tip: Take your four-legged friend with you, the ride for dogs is included on the lifts.
