5-Liber Skitour über den Schilt
Overview
Intro
Following in the Footsteps of Ski Pioneers
This rewarding ski tour features not only a long descent but also a long history. On January 8, 1893, the Schilt became the first mountain in Switzerland to be climbed on skis. In the 1940s, a round-trip ski touring ticket could be purchased from the SBB for a “5-Liber.” With this ticket, travelers took the train from Zurich to Näfels and set out on the tour over the Schilt from there. The descent ended in Mühlehorn, from where travelers took the train back to Zurich. The “5-Liber” tour was the most popular ski tour in Switzerland at the time, and at its peak, up to 1,800 people took advantage of this offer every day. The name has stuck to this day, though (fortunately) the tour isn’t quite as well-known anymore.
Welcome, fellow mountaineer. We’re glad you’ve found your way to our Glarnerland Alpine School and, by extension, to these beautiful mountains. Here, between the mountains and the valley, there’s so much to discover. Together with other mountain lovers and our mountain guides, we’d love to take you on a winter adventure.
To ensure you’re fully prepared for this tour, you’ll find all the important information here.
Requirements
You are an experienced ski tourer and a seasoned deep-snow skier on all types of snow, and you have no trouble navigating challenging terrain both on the ascent and the descent. You are fit enough for five-hour ascents on touring skis.
Daily Schedule
Travel to the starting point at Tödi Sport in Glarus. After checking our gear, we’ll be driven by bus to the Schilt ski lift’s valley station. The T-bar lift will take us to the Mittler Stafel on the Fronalp (1,583 m) in just a few minutes. This is where we’ll begin our ski tour. The route takes us past Siwellen (2,170 m) to Schilt (2,298 m). After a scenic break, we’ll enjoy a delightful powder snow descent down the long slopes to Mürtschenalp (1,721 m). If conditions permit and there’s still enough time and energy left, we can also climb the Etscherzapfen (2,232 m) (an additional 510 m elevation gain). This offers a thrilling north-facing descent. This is followed by the climb back up (approx. 200 Hm) to Robmen. In good snow conditions, the enjoyable descent across the Meerenboden extends all the way down to Obstalden (685 m). We’ll travel back to Glarus together by train.
Meeting Point
We’ll meet at 8:00 a.m. at the starting point of the Glarnerland Alpine School at Tödi Sport, Hauptstrasse 41 in Glarus. If you need to rent equipment or have made a reservation, please be there by 7:30 a.m. (30 minutes earlier) to pick up your gear.
Directions/Parking
The Glarnerland Alpine School is just a 5-minute walk from the train station. Please follow the City of Glarus’ parking guidelines (https://www.glarus.ch/verwaltung/bau-und-versorgung/parkraumbewirtschaftung/langzeit-und-nachtparkieren.html/6346) and park only in the white zones. These are located near the city center. We recommend parking your car at Kasernenplatz or Zaunplatz and purchasing a parking ticket via the ParkingPay app.
Snowboarders
Snowboarders with appropriate touring experience and the necessary equipment are, of course, welcome on our tours. We require participants to be proficient in using a splitboard. The tours are conducted with a mix of ski tourers and snowboarders. Unfortunately, we do not rent splitboards.
Additional Costs
The cost of the taxi from Näfels-Mollis to Fronalp (15 Fr.), the ride up the Schilt ski lift, and the public transportation fare from Obstalden back to Glarus are not included in the price. Please bring enough cash with you.
Important (Program Changes)
Confirmation that the tour will take place is typically sent via email between 72 and 24 hours before the tour starts. You agree to carefully read the latest information and details about your booked tour before the start time.
Food and Snacks
Bring snacks (e.g., dried fruit, chocolate, nuts, jerky, cheese, whole-grain bread, energy bars). Only bring what you really need to avoid unnecessary weight in your backpack.
After the Tour
We’ll return the rental equipment together to Tödi Sport. There, all participants will be treated to a cup of coffee or a soft drink. This is also a great opportunity to share photos from the tour with each other. Alternatively, you can also share them with the other participants afterward via a link we’ll provide.
