Tour for the Wakker Prize 2026 with Peter Salzmann, cultural guide, followed by an aperitif in the pavilion of the castle gardens.
Due to its location in the Alpine region, Brig-Glis has always been subject to the whims of nature. After the Saltina flood of 1331, Bishop Aymo ordered the construction of a defensive wall, within the protection of which Brig could develop. When the Saltina overflowed its banks again in 1640, Stockalper, as the construction manager, had the defensive wall extended – thereby securing the building site for his castle and garden. The flood disaster of 1993 "cleared out" Bahnhofstrasse and Saltinaplatz and created space for a generous urban redesign. While Kaspar Stockalper had built up the town in the 17th century and brought it to flourishing, it was Napoleon who literally "left Brig behind". On our tour, we will discover these and other fractures that were utilized as opportunities – shaping Brig-Glis into the town that will receive the Wakker Prize from the Swiss National Heritage Society in 2026.
