Orbe Gorge
Overview
Intro
Hike through the Orbe Gorges in the Canton of Vaud, past mossy rocks and through narrow tunnels. On Saut du Day you can marvel at the waterfall with its large pool, at Les Clées the glacial potholes from the Ice Age.
The Orbe Gorge at a glance
The Orbe Gorge is located in the Vaud Jura between Vallorbe and Orbe. The river Orbe has created a narrow valley with waterfalls, rapids and glacial potholes in the rock. The landscape is a nature reserve and is home to various wild animals. A 17-kilometre-long hiking trail connects the two towns.
What to experience
Hiking through the gorge (4.5 hours)
From Vallorbe or Orbe you descend to the river. The path takes you sometimes very close to the water, sometimes up into the steep rock, through tunnels and over bridges. Everything around is glowing green, even the stones have a moss cushion. With a bit of luck you will see a beaver, a kingfisher or a chamois.
- Good to know: The path requires surefootedness, individual places are secured by ropes.
- Tip: Bus and train connect Vallorbe and Orbe, so you don't have to go back.
Swimming on Saut du Day
You can hear the Saut du Day waterfall rushing from afar. Over several steps, the water plunges into a basin where you cool off on hot days. A hiking trail leads you through a tunnel directly under the waterfall. The places on the shore are good for a break.
- Good to know: From Le Day train station, you can reach the waterfall in 25 minutes on foot.
- Tip: Bring swimwear and a picnic.
Explore the glacial potholes near Les Clées
Shortly before the stone bridge at the entrance to Les Clées, you walk down a path to the glacier potholes, called "Marmites" in French. They were formed at the end of the last ice age, when meltwater turned stones in circles and thus hollowed out the rock.
- Good to know: The nearest bus stop can be reached in about 30 minutes on foot.
- Tip: Wear sturdy shoes, because the path is slippery when wet.
