Intro
Splendid hike to Lutertannen and over the Risipass vantage point to Stein in Toggenburg. Meadows and Alpine pastures, near-to-nature low-moor marshes and coniferous forests alternate in colourful sequence.
Description
Stein is a tranquil village in the canton of St. Gallen. The river Thur, which here is a stream, flows right through the middle. All around, peaks including the Stockberg, Goggeien and Neuenalpspitz dominate.
From Stein, you begin a two-hour climb to Vorder Höhi. You follow the beautiful Dürrenbach stream to Badhus. You then continue through the Schärswald forest, which extends below the peaks of Goggeien and Schär. When you reach 1,534 metres, the majority of the climb is behind you. The view across the Glarus Alps is breathtaking.
The gravel trail soon changes to a beautiful path. The Alpine Passes Trail now joins the Toggenburger Höhenweg for a section. The views are accompanied by the Linth plain and the end of Lake Walen. It takes around another one-and-a-half hours to reach Hinder Höhi.
Now, the descent begins, first gently to Alpstübli Strichbode and Restaurant Walau, both of which invite you to take a break with stunning views. This is followed by a steeper descent over 400 metres in elevation down to the destination for this stage in Amden. It is located in a hollow with a fantastic view and is rightly known as the sun terrace above Lake Walen.
