Apollo Run
Overview
Intro
Take an easy, comfortable trip up in the chairlift, enjoy the panoramic views of the world-famous mountain trio: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and then slide back down on a sledge. This is the Apollo sledge run.
Description
The Schilthorn region was practically made for snow hiking up the mountains and sledging down them. Since the 2014/15 winter season, sledging fans have been in their element on the Apollo sledge run. The adventure starts at the valley station of the Schiltgrat lift in Mürren. After just a few minutes in the chairlift, you’ll be up on the Schiltgrat, enjoying the breathtaking views over the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. High up above, the Schilthorn summit is crowned by the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria, famous for its appearance in the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
Beneath this world-famous action film scenery, the trip back down the mountain starts out equally as action-packed and challenging in the first sections. The sledges really go full speed ahead. The broad, sunny track heads down towards Gimmeln, passing the large alpine huts of Schiltalp. Shortly after speeding past the wooden chalets of Gimmeln – where you can also stop and try the world-renowned apple cake in the mountain restaurant – you will see Mürren with its complete lack of cars.
Without having to pull your sledge along, you will then travel through the snowy forest and arrive right in Mürren. The quaint little spa resort in the Bernese Highlands is the highest permanently inhabited village in the Canton.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
