Senda Alp da Munt–Alp Champatsch
Overview
Intro
Bathed in sunshine the panoramic high route leads through the isolated and snow-clad landscape above the Val Müstair. Highlights: Alp Champatsch, whose original buildings now stand in the Swiss Open-Air Museum in Ballenberg, and the little village of Lü, claimed to be the darkest place in Switzerland.
Description
The winter panorama route begins at the bottom of the lower lift of the Minschuns ski area. This well maintained, family-friendly ski area is one of the sunniest corners of Switzerland. Four ski lifts connect the area to various downhill runs. Minschuns is high enough to enjoy guaranteed snow.
Setting out through woodland a steady but gentle climb brings hikers alongside the ski piste to Alp da Munt at 2,213 m a.s.l. From here the route continues at more or less the same level to the Lai da Juata, accompanied by the panoramic view of the Val Müstair peaks and the majestic Ortler. From the little mountain lake the track descends gently through Arolla pine forest to Alp Champatsch, whose original buildings now stand in the Swiss Open-Air Museum in Ballenberg. A sunny terrace and magnificent view of the valley make this an ideal place to stop for a break. From here hikers can either continue on foot, or on the toboggan they have brought along with them, down to Lü.
Until 2009, when the six villages of Val Müstair merged to become one municipality, Lü claimed to be the highest municipality in Europe. It is situated on a sunny plateau, high above the valley floor. The name most probably comes from the Latin «lux», meaning light. For plant lovers Lü is an insider tip; benefiting from clear skies free from light pollution it is also well known as a centre for stargazing and astrophotography. From Lü hikers can extend their walk downhill to Tschierv, the first village of the Val Müstair when approaching from the Pass dal Fuorn.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
