Overview
Intro
The sledging trail from Arosa to Litzirüti meanders through the thick fir forest. It follows the river Plessur and the rails of the Rhaetian Railway. It offers over and over again nice views to Mt. Schiesshorn, Mt. Tierfluh and further mountains of the region.
Description
With every meter of altitude, every turn and every viaduct it becomes more and more wintery. More than 350 curves have to be overcome on the way from Chur to Arosa. In contrast, the sledging trail goes almost straight at the beginning. It starts at Lake Untersee, which is situated on roughly 1700 m asl. The trail follows the rails of the red Arosa Train to the Lake Stausee, which lays about 100 metres of altitude below. Shortly after, one crosses the railway lines and follows the slight turns along the river Plessur.
The sledging trail leads mainly through thick fir forests. While the Rhaetian Railway makes two huge turns, the trail brings you directly into the area «in da Brünscht» and to the finish line in Litzirüti. Populated by Walser, the village on 1450 m asl was originally composed of a few isolated farmsteads only. Nowadays, it lives mainly from summer- and especially winter tourism. Every hour, the RhB brings one back to Arosa.
Altogether, this sledging trail is rather slow and therefore perfect to enjoy the ride through the wonderful landscape. Between the close standing fir trees, you can often catch a glimpse to the magnificent peaks of the region as for example Mt. Schiesshorn or tierfluh. And when the trees block the view, with a little luck one can spot a furry woodlander.
