Zermatt-Sunnegga-Weg
Overview
Intro
Head out from the centre of Zermatt on your own steam, make it past the tree line and up into the sunlight – that's the idea behind the trail up to Sunnegga. Once you've climbed to the top, you’ll be rewarded with a glorious view of the Matterhorn.
Description
This relaxed climb from Zermatt up to Sunnegga follows a broad path, lined with imposing pines whose branches hang heavy with snow. The trail rises upwards over a series of gentle turns, punctuated by longer, flatter sections which offer views across the Matterhorn and the village of Zermatt.
In Findeln, a little below Sunnegga, there is a choice of restaurants serving traditional Valais cuisine. Depending on the time of day, it can be cool and shady down in the valley and in Tiefenmatten while the sun is already shining on Sunnegga. After all, Sunnegga, which means “sunny nook” in Swiss German, earned its name for exactly this quality. Of course, there’s another reason winter hikers might break a sweat, too – the tour covers a good 900 metres in altitude difference!
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
