Intro

Only male red deer have antlers, which grow again every year.

Though they may appear to the naked eye as small dots on the landscape, their reddish-brown summer coat makes them instantly recognisable as deer. The hind rears her calf in a herd together with other hinds, so they can always be seen in groups. Sometimes you may also see a herd of stags. These can be identified by their antlers, which are still covered in velvet in the summer. The velvet is shed from the antlers in autumn and the stags are now ready for the fights that take place during the rutting season. The antlers are shed in late winter and must grow back every year.
