Intro

The city of Neuchâtel lies nestled between Lake Neuchâtel and the rolling landscape of the Jura hills. An excursion to the region can be as varied as the landscape itself. Strolls around the city, sightseeing and an anniversary boat trip await you this summer. Why not bring the day to a particularly pleasant close with a drink as the sun goes down?

Neuchâtel

The city of Neuchâtel – also known as “Neuenburg” in German – is situated on the shore of the lake of the same name and has a rich cultural and architectural past. The city’s location right on the lake shore and its proximity to the Jura hills make it a unique destination.

Lake Neuchâtel

Lake Neuchâtel boasts a number of superlatives. Here you’ll find not only the largest wetland area and bird sanctuary in Switzerland, but also the largest lake located entirely in Swiss territory, at 38km long and 8km wide. Its northern bank is populated by vineyards and the yellow sandstone city of Neuchâtel – which is the largest city in the region.

A history of navigation

The best way to explore Lake Neuchâtel is by boat – and has been for the past 150 years. The shipping company on the lakes of Neuchâtel and Morat (LNM) has been operating cruise tours since 1872. Summer visitors not only enjoy a wonderful view of the vineyards on the northern bank, but also of the city of Neuchâtel with its mediaeval city centre and the Jura hills in the background. A trip on board one of the local steam ships is also a unique experience – ideally combined with a glass of wine and a delicious lunch.

The city

As a city that can look back on a thousand-year history, Neuchâtel possesses a unique charm and is home to one of the largest pedestrian zones in Switzerland. Yellow limestone buildings line the pretty alleyways, which are ideal places for a stroll. Perched high above the mediaeval city centre, the castle and collegiate church dominate the city’s skyline. The university city draws people in with its location right on the lake shore as well as with its cultural riches. The Museum of Art and History is particularly well worth a visit.

The harbour district

In the summer months, the harbour is the perfect place to bring a leisurely day to a close. Here, guests can dine in numerous bars and restaurants and enjoy the atmosphere as the sun goes down. The charming old fishermen’s huts have been converted into small, individual bars and reflect the picturesque atmosphere of the harbour.

The surrounding area

While enjoying the view of Neuchâtel from the vantage point of the lake, you will notice that there is a beautiful hilly landscape just beyond the city. This is also where you’ll find the Chaumont, Neuchâtel’s local mountain. It can be reached from the city by funicular and in turn offers a wonderful view of the Three Lakes Region as well as the city itself. In addition to the Chaumont, the Jura Crest Trail also offers a unique hike through the surrounding area.
