Intro

The Simplon Pass connects Switzerland with Italy. In the midst of wild high mountain landscapes, it invites you to hike through lonely high moors, along quiet mountain lakes and on historic trade routes.

The Simplon Pass at a glance

The Simplon Pass is located at an altitude of 2005 meters. The pass road, which is open all year round, connects Brig in Valais with Domodossola in Italy. At the top of the pass, the 9-metre-high golden eagle is a landmark reminder of the "Watch on the Simplon" during the Second World War. The hospice and the natural mountain lakes characterise the landscape.

What to experience

Hike the Stockalperweg (2–3 hours)

Follow the historic mule track from the Simplon Pass to the village of Simplon. On the paved path you will see the old hospice, hike through alpine landscapes and discover the history of the trade route on information boards. With a bit of luck, you will encounter marmots and chamois along the way.

  • Good to know: The path is well signposted and also suitable for families.
  • Tip: The bus line B 631 takes you back to the starting point at the top of the pass.

Hike to the mountain lakes on the Simplon Pass (1–2 hours)

The circular trail leads you through high moor landscapes to Lake Rotel and Lake Hopschusee. The two mountain lakes are located at over 2000 meters directly on the pass road. On a clear day, the surrounding peaks are reflected in the water. The path is mostly flat and offers views of the Fletschhorn.

  • Good to know: There are parking spaces directly at the top of the pass.
  • Tip: Visit the observatory on the Simplon Pass when the night sky is clear.

Get to know the village of Simplon

Simplon village is one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. The flagstone roofs and the historic village square give it a touch of Italian charm. In the eco-museum "Alter Gasthof" you can immerse yourself in the history of the passport trade. The local dairy produces award-winning raclette cheese.

  • Good to know: The village can be reached from the Simplon Pass in about 10 minutes by car.
  • Tip: Try the traditional Valais rye bread from the village bakery.
