Intro

The Jungfrau-Aletsch Region was chosen as the first Alpine UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2001. At its heart lies the mighty rock massif of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and the glacial landscape around the Great Aletsch Glacier.

Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch at a glance

The UNESCO World Heritage Site stands for the natural beauty of the Alps. The Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier in the Alps, with a length of 23 km. To cross the Aletsch Glacier is to take a magnificent journey into a stunning world of ice and rocks, Alpine flowers and forests. Enjoy spectacular views of the glacier on a hike through the sunny Aletsch Forest, home to Switzerland's oldest stone pines, or on the Glacier Trail from the Bettmerhorn to Lake Märjelen.

The climatic conditions on the southern slopes are completely different from those in the area of the summit and glaciers: aridity and strong solar radiation lend the landscape a mediterranean touch. The Lötschen, Joli,Bietsch, Baltschieder and Gredetsch valleys have largely been able to preserve their original character. Off the beaten tracks of the main tourist routes, they offer peace and tranquillity along the suonen and mountain streams. The Aletsch Glacier can be admired from several different angles and viewpoints – such as the Moosfluh, from the Bettmerhorn, Eggishorn and Jungfraujoch. All four of these vantage points are easily reached by mountain rail and cableways.
