Intro
From Belalp to Nesselalp, this trail leads through alpine meadows, past blueberry fields and along the Nessjeri-Suone. The panorama of the Valais peaks and the Aletsch glacier is magnificent. Afterwards, the route becomes stonier, dustier and steeper down to Birgisch.
Description
Belalp is located on a terrace on the southern flank of Unterbächhorn and Sparrhorn. The starting point of this mountain bike tour, which requires advanced riding skills, is the cable car top station of the holiday resort. After an easy descent on a gravel road, you reach the facilities of the Kelchbach gondola and chairlift. Following the red signs, the mountain bikers reach Unner Staful on Alpe Bäll. Here they leave the last houses of Belalp behind.
After crossing the Kelchbach stream on a bridge, you find yourself on the panorama trail which takes you over alpine meadows and past blueberry fields. In the last section before reaching Nesselalp, you follow the Nessjeri-Suone. The irrigation channel dates from the 15th century and carries water from June to mid-October. The Suone begins at the Kelchbach stream and rushes down to the valley as a foaming torrent at the end. On Nesselalp, it is worth taking a look at the chapel "Maria zum Schnee" - and of course enjoying the fantastic view of the Great Aletsch glacier and the Valais mountains.
After this break, the trail heads downhill towards Birgisch. The descent begins on a trail over rock slabs and roots. Heading towards Chittumatte, the character of the route changes increasingly, the trail now turns into a stony and dusty path. The hairpin bend section down to Birgisch is quite steep, but manageable. From Oberbirgisch, there are various roads towards Birgisch, the saffron village of Mund, Naters, or Brig.
