Nidwaldner Höhenweg
Overview
Intro
The view from the Stanserhorn over the alpine chain and ten lakes is magnificent. After the descent to Ächerli, the Holzwang chapel commemorates the French raid of 1798. A root path climbs to the Arvigrat ridge. The path is exposed at the Wagenleis (Charren) canyon but secured with ropes. The stage finishes via Schluchigrat ridge at the Storegg pass.
Description
The first highlight, even before the hike begins, is the scenery from the Stanserhorn: ten Swiss lakes, countless Alpine peaks, the Vosges Mountains, and the Black Forest. Traveling to the starting point is already an experience in itself, as the Stanserhorn is reached with the world’s first cabrio cable car with an open upper deck. A revolving restaurant is available directly at the mountain station. Approximately halfway around the Stanserhorn the path descends steeply (made easier by steps) to Holzwang. Taking a detour to the chapel of the same name is a good choice.
The wide trail first crosses a few meadows, but it changes to a mountain path near Hermannstalden. After a steep climb over some rooted sections Arvi Ridge is reached in about two hours. It marks the border between Obwalden and Nidwalden. A phenomenal mountain panorama opens up at the highest point (2014 m). Walking across the ridge is literally a feast for the eyes, because you can see the mountains from Walenstock to Titlis, Schreckhorn and Eiger, even far into the Vaud region and all the way to the Jura range. After this first ridge the wide grassy ridge of Gräfimattgrat is right in front of you.
The path zigzags up to Schluchberg. The upper, somewhat exposed part is secured with a rope. Next comes the key section of this stage: the Wagenleis (Charren) canyon, a short, exposed area, also secured with ropes. This section requires surefootedness as well as a head for heights. The descent after Schluchigrat through a wooded area is followed by another zigzag path leading to Lachengrätli. The Engelberg Valley and the Walenstöcke Mountains are visible from here. The narrow path takes you around Storegghorn or Lachenhörnli to Storeggpass, today’s destination.
