Description

From the early to mid-20th century, Zurich suffered from a shortage of hospital beds. In response to this unsustainable state of affairs, the city opened the Waid City Hospital for the north Zurich region in 1953 and the Triemli City Hospital for people living on the left bank of the river Limmat in 1970. The route starts above the Albisgrat ridge, which is a very popular destination on sunny weekends in particular.

The initial section covers just under 400 metres in altitude. The Uetliberg-Albis conservation area is characterised by its highly diverse range of habitats. For example, the fields and woods here are home not only to smooth snakes, the Western Bonelli’s warbler and the midwife toad, but also to rare types of orchid. An inviting gravel road leads uphill towards the Uto Kulm hotel. This hiking route is right next to a mountain bike trail that winds down into the valley. It is worth stopping now and then to watch how the cyclists handle the Antennentrail’s downhill bends. After around an hour and a half, you can then enjoy the view from Zurich’s local mountain over the city, lake and as far as Säntis.

The path continues on a wide gravel road. There is a planet trail connecting the Üetliberg (representing the sun) and the Felsenegg mountains (representing Pluto). The route maps out a scale model of the solar system. Each metre represents a distance of one million kilometres. The scenic, well-trodden path along the edge of the woods boasts a magnificent view of the shimmering Lake Zurich and the mountains in the distance. There are various options for refreshments along the way, including a farmhouse café, a little tearoom and, of course, several restaurants boasting terraces with panoramic views. If you’re so inclined, there are also various barbecue and picnic spots that you can stop at along the way.

Once you arrive at the Buchenegg Pass, there is one hour of walking left until you reach the level of the Albis Pass. On both passes, you are sure to come across racing bikes and motorbikes – these areas are popular local getaways. For many years, the pass road from Mettmenstetten and over the Albis to Langnau am Albis was the most important link between Zurich and Central Switzerland.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
