Wolf Gorge
Overview
Intro
A nature experience that really gets under your skin: This is the Wolfsschlucht Gorge in Thal Nature Park in the Solothurn Jura region. It is also an ideal adventure playground for children.
The narrow gorge features steep rock faces and the ever-present sound of rushing water. A hike through this breathtaking gorge will take around one and a half hours. You’ll find several barbecue spots along the way where you can stop for a picnic. Some of these are even inside caves and come with picnic benches. It’s hardly surprising that the children will feel like Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men here.
If you want to discover a little more of the region, you can take the adjoining extended hiking trail. An hour-long ascent takes you through a wildly romantic valley with rock walls – that are up to 100 metres high, caves and gulleys. Your constant companion along the way is the River Tannbach, which created this impressive spectacle of nature. The trail continues across wonderful Jura meadows. At various points you have an excellent view of the other side of the valley, which is where one of the largest continuously forested areas in Switzerland can be found. The descent passes through an area that is home to wild lynx and back into the valley to Welschenrohr. All in all, a hike that demands physical fitness, but rewards hikers with plenty of variety.
Getting there: By train to Thalbrücke, then take the PostBus to the Herbetswil Wolfsschlucht stop (request stop).
