This is the Rigi
The Rigi can be found in the centre of Switzerland, between
Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz. This mountain is one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations, thanks to its accessibility as well as the many leisure opportunities on offer there.
Discover the Rigi
The Rigi is known as the “Queen of the Mountains”. Is this because of the exciting journey by boat and mountain railway? Or is it because of the great vantage points, hiking trails and mountain restaurants? See for yourself at the summit, 1,800 metres up: the view of the inlets of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains is simply breathtaking. Incidentally, not only can you hike on the Rigi, but you can also go cycling,
tobogganing and paragliding, and enjoy the wellness opportunities available: in the beautiful
Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths, you can relax in the thermal pool with panoramic views.
Cable cars and mountain railways to the Rigi
One mountain,
nine routes: no other summit in Switzerland is accessible from so many different places. You can travel to Rigi Kulm from
Vitznau by cogwheel railway, to Rigi Kaltbad from
Weggis by cable car, or to the Seebodenalp panoramic terrace from
Küssnacht. The real highlight here is the
historic train rides: such as on the Lok 7 from Vitznau, the world’s only travelling rack-and-pinion steam locomotive. Early booking is advised.
Hiking on the Rigi
Find your ideal route on the 120 kilometres of hiking trails on the Rigi massif: the
Lake View Hike with a stop at the Känzeli lookout point is a particularly enjoyable one. There are a few thrills along the cliff path with its spectacular views. The Flower Trail, which leads through blooming alpine meadows, is the highlight in summer. You can relax and fortify yourself at one of the traditional mountain restaurants or at the picnic areas along the way.
Around the Rigi
A trip to the Rigi can be wonderfully combined with a
boat trip on Lake Lucerne. Discover the Riviera of Central Switzerland, which includes Weggis, Vitznau,
Gersau and
Brunnen – and of course the city of
Lucerne. A detour to Lake Zug and the city of
Zug or to Lake Lauerz and the island of Schwanau will be well worthwhile.
