Intro

With its sustainability strategy, the Swiss Youth Hostels organisation sets an example for the Swiss tourism industry and motivates others to follow this path as well.

Sustainability strategy

Swiss Youth Hostels are committed to sustainability. They believe that sustainability means taking into account not only social and ethical issues, but also the sensible use of resources. Their sustainability strategy is built on three pillars:

  • Social aspects
  • Ecology
  • Economy

Social aspects

Their prices are set in such a way that ensures that services will remain affordable, while still guaranteeing good quality and fair wages. Inclusion efforts have a particular focus on accessibility.

The Swiss Youth Hostels sustainability strategy is characterised by long-term, consistent implementation. In all of our decisions, whether in construction or operation, we are guided equally by social, economic and environmental values.

Accessible Swiss Youth Hostels

The aim is to make all aspects of Swiss Youth Hostels – from information acquisition online right through to the hostels themselves – entirely accessible to everyone.

The St. Moritz Youth Hostel, like the majority of the 50 other youth hostels, obtained certification at the highest level “Level III – leading” from Switzerland Tourism’s sustainability program.

Ecology

Swiss Youth Hostels operate a comprehensive environmental management system that takes ecological principles into account in both construction and operation. Almost all youth hostels are certified with the ibex fairstay label.

Roland Fischer, manager at the St. Moritz Youth Hostel, is convinced that the catering options now available in all youth hostels make an important contribution to ecological sustainability, thanks to the various vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free menus on offer. Purchasing policies are also key, since Swiss Youth Hostels focus on local and seasonal produce in order to keep CO2 emissions as low as possible.
