Intro

What begins smoothly in Meiental becomes more Alpine, rougher and tougher as you climb: take the pass road if you want to avoid pushing and carrying on the upper section to the Sustenpass. Downhill into Gadmental with testing trail sections.

Description

The tenth stage of the Alpine Bike route is challenging: 58 kilometres and a climb of around 1,800 metres of elevation demand good physical fitness. But the effort is worth it. You start in Andermatt in the majestic high valley in Uri, surrounded by eight impressive Alpine passes. The first highlight comes shortly after entering the valley: the Schöllenen Gorge and the famous Teufelsbrücke bridge. Local people built this masterpiece of bridge construction around 1200, conquering the previously impassable gorge. The wooden bridge was replaced by a stone one in 1595. The monument to General Suvorov commemorates 1799, when the Russians successfully advanced through here despite resistance from French troops.

You then make a fast-paced descent slightly above the road until Göschenen. While the centre of the village is little known, the village name is famous for marking the start of the tunnel towards Airolo and Ticino. Between 1872 and 1882, the world’s longest railway tunnel, and later from 1970 to 1980, the longest motorway tunnel were built here. You continue along the railway tracks towards Wassen. This includes a brief, technically demanding section of the trail.

After the first ten kilometres are behind you comes the 16-kilometre, 1,400-metre climb to the Susten Pass. The first ascent is quite steep. You pedal around several bends and through a beautiful forest towards the Meiental valley. Continuing along the Meienreuss river, you pass through small villages and have a magnificent view of the mountains. After the flat section at Hinterfeldboden, you have a decision: steep climb with passages where you have to push your bike on the mountain bike route, or take the pass road. While the trail is steep, it is beautiful, with views across the Meiental valley, the pass road and numerous peaks. Once you reach the top, the mountain restaurant invites you to take a break.

You then have a long descent over 26 kilometres and 1,700 metres of elevation. Above the man-made but stunning Wysse Bach waterfall, you continue at a fast pace towards the Steingletscher mountain hotel. You should take care not to miss the turnoff at Löibwälli. A flowing trail and then a gravel road follow to Käppeli.

In Innetkirchen, you tackle the final five kilometres to Meiringen. From the Aare gorge downwards, there unfortunately isn’t much to see. However, you will need to tap into your energy reserves again for the final 200 metres of elevation. When you reach your destination for this stage in Meiringen, you will also have completed the second-longest stage of the Alpine Bike route.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
