Description
The first stage of the Jura Bike route begins at Basel main station. 365 kilometres and almost 10,000 metres of elevation spread over nine stages link the city on the Rhine to Nyon on Lake Geneva. Basel is located in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland. It is worth taking an additional detour: Museums, theatres, the botanical gardens, the zoo and of course the old town with the Marktplatz (market square), city hall and the late-Romanesque, gothic church are just a few of the city’s highlights.
Cycling through residential areas, you reach open farmland, which is popular with joggers, cyclists and walkers. Past the Predigerhof restaurant, you reach the woodland around Angenstein, which is maintained by the six surrounding Bürgergemeinde (citizens’ communities). The forest is followed again by farmland and a few vineyards. The climb towards the Blaueberg begins at the Rütenen nature reserve. Flower-filled hayfields, which are only cut in June and August, allow the plants to self-seed and thus to fully complete the first growth cycle.
The oversized bench at the Blattepass stands out. It’s a fun idea, which may make you want to take a break or climb up. It’s now also time to get back on your bike. After a 300-metre gain in elevation, you have a fantastic view over the Laufen valley and the surrounding Jura hills. You then cycle on undulating terrain to Forstberg, with further magnificent views. After this, it’s time to put on your glasses and windbreaker and get pedalling – you now have a fast-paced descent to Laufen, largely on the main road. Once you’re past Birsfall, the first stage of the Jura Bike route ends at the historic town’s station.
