Trail Run Lobhörner
Overview
Intro
This run takes you into the remote Soustal, around the jagged Lobhörner and across the green ridge of the Sulegg, before dropping back into the river valley and returning to Grütschalp station above Lauterbrunnen.
Description
From Lauterbrunnen, a quick tram ride takes you to Grütschalp. The lift saves you some metres before you start running a forested traverse into the open Soustal, following the Chantbach River. With an extended uphill section ahead, you’ll be happy you saved your legs for later. The climb begins at the back of the valley and quickly brings up sweeping views of the region’s famous mountain trio: the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
After passing along the Lobhörner, a short scree field connects the col to the ridge of the Sulegg. The ridge is short in distance but has an airy feel while bounding along the grassy path. As you reach the end of the ridge, you’ll see Interlaken and Lake Brienz below. Directly above the lake, the long line of the Hardergrat ridge stretches east to Brienz.
A quick descent from the ridge takes you to the perfectly situated Lobhorn Hut. After a potentially prolonged pause on the terrace and a helping of delicious nut cake (Haslikuchen), finish the circuit with a short climb and a five-star descent back to Grütschalp, or all the way down to Lauterbrunnen.
Tip from ALPSinsight: Navigation is easy and there is a path in summer, but you have to cross a short scree field and follow the grassy Sulegg Ridge, temporarily off official trails.
