Via Alpina
Overview
Intro
From the hustle and bustle of Grindelwald, head up to the Kleine Scheidegg mountain pass. The trail snakes its way over gently rolling hills and pastures, with the clatter of the cog railway to be heard in the distance. The impressive mountain panorama and north face of the Eiger seem almost close enough to touch. Finally, a sunny panorama trail goes down to the Lauterbrunnen Valley via Wengen.
Description
Those who love people watching will love being in Grindelwald. Many tourists can already be observed early in the morning as they arrive in the village or travel onwards towards the Jungfraujoch region. Families and solo travellers from all around the world, equipped with a rucksack and camera, embark to see as much of the region as possible in the shortest possible time.
If the goings-on are a little much, then head off on the trail towards the Kleine Scheidegg. Few people will be encountered on foot here, as most opt for the easier way of getting up the mountain, taking the cog railway from Grindelwald to the top of the Kleine Scheidegg.
On foot, the walk up involves gentle hills and meadows, with traditional wooden huts and stalls dotted along the way. The ascent becomes ever steeper, which makes Berghaus Alpiglen the perfect place for taking a little break. This serves up delicious local specialities with a modern touch in a tranquil atmosphere. With your batteries recharged, you will be ready to tackle the final section of this stage and climb the Kleine Scheidegg.
From there, a sunny high-level trail takes hikers all the way to Wengen. Now, all that remains is to go down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with its vertical rock faces and spectacular waterfalls.
