Intro

From the Engstlenalp, you climb up to the Sätteli, crossing via an exposed mountain path on the northern flank of the Gadmerflüö. The mountain path descends steeply down to the Tällihütte and follows the mountain flank into the Gadmen Valley. At the end, it zig-zags steeply down to Gadmen.

Description

The overnight stay in one of the authentically furnished rooms from the founding period of the Engstlenalp spa hotel is an experience in itself. When you wake up, you can see the first rays of sunlight on the Wetterhorn massif. Next to the hotel, there is a show dairy where you can watch the entire cheese-making process. Engstlenalp can also be reached several times a day by bus from Innertkirchen.

The hiking route leads past the Engstlen lake along a small alpine road to the Arvenegg alp. From here, the entire stage continues on narrow mountain paths to the finish of the day in Gadmen. From the last alp, Scharmad, the trail winds through the northern flank of the Gadmerflüö, maintaining the altitude but with a few drops. If you are out all too early, you will be walking in the shade for a long time. After Bäregg, the trail climbs steadily, at the end over some slippery scree slopes up to Sätteli at 2116 metres. New views of the mountains in the Susten region open up here.

You descend over steep rocky ledges and along the mountain flank to the Tälli hut which is manned and can also be reached by cable car from the Susten pass road near Fuhren. Deep down in the valley, the Gadmer stream and the pass road are in view. You continue hiking north-eastwards on the same altitude over the alps at the foot of the Gadmerflüö. After crossing two torrent ditches, alp Raflue follows and the snowy peak of the Sustenhorn becomes visible. A steep alpine path descends in many twists and turns through the mountain forest. Along an avalanche deflection dam and across hay fields, the hike ends in the village of Gadmen. Together with the hamlet of Obermad, it is the last settlement on the Susten pass that is inhabited all year round.
