Zugerberg-Loipe
Overview
Intro
Cross-country skiers can escape the hustle and bustle above the fog, within viewing distance of the pulsing economic hub of Zug. In the snowy highland moors, you can imagine you are in Scandinavia and enjoy views stretching as far as the Rigi and the Alpine foothills.
Description
If you take Zugerbergbahn funicular railway up to 925 metres above sea level and escape the fog, shortly after the mountain station you'll come to the Vordergeissboden, the starting point of the trail. Here you'll also find all the infrastructure you need to be well prepared to set out. Past the two «Tankfallen», precautionary measures dating back to the Second World War, you'll come to the Schäftboden. Here you'll find the night-time cross-country ski trail, which is open every day. From the Schäftboden, you can see the most challenging section of the Zugerberg cross-country ski trail, the ascent from the Hintergeissboden to the Ewegstafel.
Still slightly out of breath, you'll become immersed in a different landscape. You'll glide across the upland moors, where you can see the Rigi, the Uri Rotstock, and other pre-Alpine mountain peaks in the distance. When you've marvelled to your heart's content, you'll arrive at the Früebüel, which served as a military prison camp until 1988 and is now an agricultural research station run by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). From the Früebüel, the route continues upwards to the Buschenchappeli chapel, where you can enjoy another wonderful panoramic view. Shortly afterwards you'll come to the Pfaffenboden mountain restaurant, the highest point of the cross-country trail.
After a short loop, the route leads past the Buschenchappeli in a sweeping downhill run back to the Früebüel, and with plenty of momentum you'll plunge into the most beautiful part of the trail. From the plateau of the protected moorland landscape, you'll come to the Neuweidschür, where a last glance back over the moor and the mountains makes the starting the notorious descent to the Hintergeissboden restaurant easier. You'll be back at the starting point at the Vordergeissboden again in just a few minutes.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
