Intro

From the monastery village of Disentis/Mustér, this stage leads through small farming villages, and past the Sogn Giachen chapel in Cuoz, which was built by the Brotherhood of St. James. On the mountain path, you can enjoy the view of the Vorderrhein, which winds through the valley. You cross the 120-metre-long railway viaduct at Bugnei.

Description

The name Disentis comes from the Latin word “desertina”. It refers to an uncultivated, sparsely populated area. Mustér – from “monasterium” – refers to the famous local Benedictine monastery. Its foundation walls, or rather those of St. Mary’s and St. Martin’s Church, were built around the year 700. The baroque monastery complex then followed between 1684 and 1704. As this stage of the Grisons Way of St. James is rather short, you have enough time for a visit: The baroque monastery church invites you to pause, the museum gives you an understanding of its history, while the extent of the site is impressive.

Continuing on foot, you leave the municipality, following the main road and a gravel road to the smaller settlement in Segnas. You soon reach the next small village – Mumpé Tujetsch – on a gravel road. A pretty path winds along the railroad tracks, leading slightly upwards towards Sedrun. On the way there, you can see the beautiful railway bridge after Bugnei station. The viaduct was built – with interruptions – between 1913 and 1925. Nine arches form the basis of the 120-metre-long construction, which spans Val Bugnei.

Sedrun, the main settlement in the municipality of Tujetsch, follows the bridge. Many people only know this district, although Tujetsch includes ten others: Tschamut, Selva, Dieni, Rueras, Zarcuns, Camischolas, Gonda, Bugnei, Surrein and Cavorgia. You leave the village on a gravel road, and this stage ends shortly afterwards in Rueras, the municipality's second-largest district. The largest local building is the 18th-century village church, dedicated to St. James.
