Jakobsweg Graubünden
Overview
Intro
Ladir, Ruschein and Siat lie high above the valley floor, offering views of the popular Piz Mudaun. After Alp Siat a steep path through the woods leads to the Jakobus display of the Kirche St. Valentin in Pigniu/Panix. Here, the Suvorov Army once pilfered.
Description
Falera is located on a terrace on the left slope of the Vorderrhein Valley in the Surselva region. The parish church is adorned with the municipality’s coat of arms, one of the oldest in the Grisons Oberland. The landmark of the village, St. Remigius Church, is located at the foot of the treeless Muotta hill, in the immediate vicinity of the important cultural and astronomy site from pre-Roman times.
Along the gravel path, the trail soon turns into the forest. Past the Val da Cafogns, a wide view opens up of the distant Falera and beyond, the capital of the canton of Grisons.
The stage then becomes a road and passes Ladir, a mountain farming village that almost completely burned down in 1891 due to the careless use of fire by two boys. You now cross the small stream Ual da Mulin and the path leads to the small village of Siat. Two sections of remains of a tower from the Friberg ruins are still visible on the mighty rock above Siat.
The hike continues on a gravel road, accompanied by the panoramic view of the Grisons and Ticino Alps. From Darpagaus, the Grisons Way of St. James shares the route to Panix with the Via Suworow. The impassable and steep forest path was the last metres for the Russians in 1799, when General Suvorov’s army was retreating to Ilanz after heavy losses.
You continue on a gravel road to change to the other face of the side valley and you cross the Schmuer, which rises near Hausstock and Muttenstock, and flows just above from the Lag da Pigniu reservoir. It is now not far to the destination for this stage. The last stretch leads through a wide and green landscape with views of the mountains to the mountain village of Andiast.
